Improv Corner – Mix Up Your Warm Ups!

Over the past few months I have realised that one of the funniest things you can do in an improv rehearsal is remix a warm up game. You can come up with so many different variations and sometimes they can be so ridiculously stupid that they make them even the more fun to play.
This is something that we now do on a regular basis as it is a fun way to make rehearsals different. We also tend to mix up warm up games so we develop basic skills so we don’t have to spend part of the time going over it later on.
Sometimes the most ridiculous remixes can actually work really well and this is how we have come up with some of our fun warm up games. I am not going to tell you all the ones that we do because it may bore you however I will talk about one of our recent changes that we have created.
One of the things that we always want to make sure of in Punders is to make sure that our Characters or Emotions are good on stage. Sometimes it can be hard to be in the spirit or focus to sometimes commit to every emotion when it is thrown to it. So one of our members, I forget whether it was James or Yiannis came up with the idea of using emotion in our own version of zip zap zop.
We already play Zip Zap Zop in a different way to most people but we decided to add a different dynamic to it that every-time we go round the circle we choose an emotion that we are going to do around the circle. The aim of the game is to make it more dramatic and to raise the level of drama every time.
The little things like this can make a huge difference to your warm up, it can make it more efficient and more fun for both yourselves and also the rehearsal.
