It is Classic Andy Month on The Phoenix Remix and we are not just giving you group interviews we are also giving you a proper introduction to each member of the troupe! Today we talk to member Emma Waterford to find out all about her world of improv.
Hello Emma! How long have you been improvising?
I think it’s about 4 years now – time flies when you’re having fun!
How did you get into improv?
I was looking for a way to be more confident in front of an audience and in life generally and I asked a cabaret performer and amazing improviser for advise. She gave me some suggestions of Hoopla courses and I signed up the next day!
What is your favourite style of improv and why?
I’m not sure that I have one, it’s usually whatever the style of the last show I saw was! I love slow burn with grounded emotional scenes but a short form set crammed with jokes can make me just as happy!
Who are your top 5 favourite improvisers and why?
Maria Peters – her endless energy and ability to make an audience laugh and cry in the same scene.
Cariad Lloyd – she creates amazing grounded characters as well as some of the silliest!
Alison Thea-Skot – I just love her characters!
Rhiannon Vivian – creates some of the funniest dark and absurd characters I’ve ever seen!
Katy Schutte – just brilliant and really honest on (and off!) the stage.
What is your favourite warm up game?
Hot Spot, where you sing songs inspired by previous songs. I’m not always the quickest but it’s so much fun!
Favourite short form game?
New Choice! New Choice! Story teller die! (See what I did there?)
What are the three top tips anyone has ever taught you in improv?
Yes and (I still have difficulty with this – I tend to go negative)
In no more than 5 words, what advice would you give them?
Stop thinking, just do it! (I need to take my own advice!)
What are some of your favourite new acts you have come across this year and why?
I loved watching The Concept perform in July. They created an album of funny, diverse and super talented songs with amazing improvisation from the actors and the musicians – I was blown away by it!
How would you describe your personal sort of improv?
Probably on the quiet side with a punchline or two.
Describe each Classic Andy member in one word
This is difficult – they are all brilliant in so many ways!
James H: Grounded
James W: Characterisationextrodinaire (thats a word!)
