About the Show

Singled Out was a dating game show that was on MTV between the years of 1995 – 1998 and was all about competing for a date with one contestant. Whilst there was a UK version of the show between the years of 1998 – 2001 on Channel 5, it was originally a game show from the United States Of America. It was hosted by Chris Hardwick and Jenna McCarthy and later co-hosted by Carmen Electra.

The show begins when the contestant who is choosing the date is brought onto the set blindfolded in front of the 50 potential dates in the “Dating Pool” while the announcer describes them. Throughout the game, they are hidden away from seeing the potential dates by a wall.

There are many different games that the contestants have to play throughout the show. There is a category round where the contestant choosing the date gets to choose out of a number of different categories which are all multiple choice. This means that by the end of the round, there will be about 8 potential dates left in the competition for the next round.

The next round the potential dates are asked a number of questions both which had either verbal or physical answers and the contestant would choose if the player should stay or be dumped. If they were kept then the person would advance to the final round, if they were dumped they are marked with a prop such as a toilet seat around their head so when the contestant can see them they will know who they dumped.

In the final round the wall is removed and behind the contestant a walkway with several spaces is revealed. The potential dates have to answer a number of questions, if they have the same as the contestant then they move forward one space. The first person who reaches the contestant first wins the date.

The finalist and the contestant were placed back to back in the final reveal and a description of each other was explained by host Hardwick. Then they would turn around to reveal their faces to one another, the prizes and trip that they in as well.
