The Travel Book – Cable Car to Monte, Funchal, Madeira

When you are on holiday on a mountainous island the one thing you really want to see is, well, the views from a decent height. In Funchal in Madeira there is a cable car and whist it is a prime route to use to get to the town of Monte or is also a fantastic way to see the stunning coastline.

The cable car was introduced to Almirante Reis Park in central Funchal in November 2000. It is known as a Gondola lift. The cable car has big windows so that when you start to rise you can see the stunning views.

The cable car is open 364 days of the year and is open from 9 am daily. The journey takes around 20 minutes and the route is 3200m long. The cable car is 11 euros for a single and 16 euros for a return. There is a bus in Monte that will take you back down if you don’t fancy the journey back.

The views are outstanding as you travel to but it does wobble and if you don’t like heights it may not be for you.

In Monte there is plenty to see as there is a huge botanical garden and also is home to the traditional basket cars. Both of these are quite pricey and very touristy so be warned.
