All this month we are talking to acts that have shows that are in the theme of Love because of Valentines Day being just around the corner! Today we speak to Mariana of the London based All female group 20% Lesa who are set to make audiences laugh with their show they are hosting at The Miller on the 14th February.
Hello Mariana. For those who haven’t heard of you, tell us about 20% Less?
We’re a team of 3 female improvisers, doing longform improv for a couple of years and hard at work trying to smash the patriarchy for half of it! You can read more about us at The Pheonix Remix previous interviews.
Tell us a little bit about the show you are performing on the 14th February?
We are not only performing at the show, but also curating, producing and promoting it!
We have a monthly show – Word of Muff – where we curate an all female line-up of comedians – improv, sketch, stand-up and character. This month, our show lands on the 14th February, which means we are theming it around the date.
Expect awkward dating and sex stories brought to you by talented female comedians!
Will there be any love themed surprises for the audience?
Part of the show is improvised, so there’ll surely be some surprises there! Come to the show to find out what else we have in store for you!
What makes you different to other comedy shows happening around London that are Valentine’s Day Themed?
We’ll be honest and say we haven’t done an exhaustive market research of all Valentine’s Day themed shows happening in London, but we’re planning to get down to the nitty and gritty of it all! Love is great, but not always clean and pink like rom coms make you believe and our show will attempt to show exactly that!
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
They can follow us @20PercentLess on Facebook and @20Percent_Less on Twitter.
You have a lot of different acts perform at your nights – what have been some of your personal favourites?
That’s a really difficult question to answer as everyone we had playing at our nights has been awesome! It’s one of the joys of programming a night – to have awesome people say yes to your request to play and see how many great people are out there writing and performing to such an high standard!
If people want to get involved with your nights how do they apply?
Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or DM us at our Facebook page!
And Finally – in three words why should people come and see you at The Miller?
A reviewer said we’re “Natural, funny and very reactive” and that we curate a “superb choice of guest performers” – we’ll let that speak for itself! We’re also always looking to surprise and get better at what we’re doing, so come see what we’re up to! (Oh, damn! These are more than 3 words!)
QUICK FIRE ROUND
I may have to say Seinfeld as it shaped my teenage self, but picking one out of all the sitcoms out there is very difficult! Also, I’m speaking as ⅓ of 20% Less, not for all of us – all complaints about the messages in this interview can be directed to Mariana.
That’s an impossible question! So many of them influence me and surprise me on an almost daily basis.
Favourite short form game to play in improv?
Hmmm..I’m one of those rare improvisers who has never done short form!
The last thing you liked on social media?
Probably some post by “No Film School” on Facebook.
What would your autobiography be called?
Don’t buy it, go watch my comedy!
What is your favourite joke?
Why is 6 afraid of 7, cause 7 8 9 – or – Why did the orange stop? ‘Cause it ran out of juice – are 2 jokes I once discovered for homework for English class and never forgot – not sure if that makes them my favourite though.
An improv group you would love to collaborate with?
Doppelgänger … I just loved them and keep thinking I’d love to bring them to perform in London (among many others to be fair).
