Off The Record – The Lonely Island

Have you ever wanted To listen to a new band or musician and not sure where to start? Well, instead of listening to their commercial music, why not start with something off the record first! Today we talk about a comedy group that are known for writing a lot of Digital Shorts for SNL, and creating the highly successful single I Just Had Sex – The Lonely Island.

Shrooms – Incredibad album

If there is one thing that The Lonely Island do with a lot of their albums is that they produce mini Skits to go in between the songs and this is one of the best on the debut album. The thing that is great about this song is that even though it is about drugs it has a musical tone of a Mario computer game to it. It’s short sweet and quite amusing.

We Like Sportz – Incredibad album

One thing you need to know about The Lonely Island that they don’t just create comedy songs they also produce a lot of characters to go with them as well. One of the characters they produce songs for on a  regular basis in their early work is the Normal Guys where they try and prove that they fit in with the “norm” of what you expect from men. This is the first one – even though they don’t release them as singles, they always create a video for.

Incredibad – Incredibad album

It is not everyday you have an album where the title track is the last song but in true Lonely Island style – they dare to be different. This song is narrative based and follows the story of friendship, an alien and how they got the title of this album.

Mama – Turtle Neck and Chain album

A lot of songs on this album were released as singles or were part of a short film for Saturday Night Live – so it is hard to come across stuff that is new and unique – however saying that there are a few album tracks that are hidden little gems. This is one of the best album tracks – its a rap based song about how much these guys love their mums and then the mother interrupts throughout and they start acting really childish – it’s fun and a hilarious concept.

Attracted To Us – Turtle Neck and Chain album

Just like Shrooms on the first album, this is another musical skit piece however it is really catchy and a fun little listen. It has a jolly beat and is worth listening to.

We Need Love – The Wack album

This album is full of lots of gems and this is one of the very few non singles that is worth a listen. This is by the Normal guys I was telling you about earlier on and this is another song of theirs that you need to listen to. It is funny and just creates pure humour because of the flat based tone and seriousness that Jorma and Akiva rap it in.

And Finally

The Lonley Island Boys released another album that went along with their film Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping and there are a few songs that you should listen to as well on that as they were not technically singles.

I’m So Humble – Popstar: Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping album

This song feature Adam Levine from Maroon 5 and is a really good catchy little song. Whilst it is meant to be a single by Connor (Andy Sambergs character) it is a very good song in a great Lonely Island way. If you like their first song with Adam called YOLO then you will def like this.

Finest Song –  Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping album

The concept of this song is ridiculous and whilst I am not a fan of the actual lyrics, the music is so addictive that it is hard not to listen to it. It is very out there so i will warn you but it is hard to stop it playing as well.

Mona Lisa –  Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping album

In true Lonely Island fashion this song is completely and uttely ridiculous but also like their true form the chorus really is pretty catchy and will make it stuck in your head for hours.
