Forgotten Pop

Forgotten Pop! – This Week – Lonnie Gordon

Today we look at a musician that was a hit in the nineties and even top the charts throughout that decade. Today we look at the R&B Singer Lonnie Gordon.

Lonnie was born in Philadelphia and moved to the Bronx from an early age and started performing around Harlem in the early eighties  as the lead singer of a band called Nythjar. She moved to the UK in the late eighties as she met her husband and wanted to reside in his country. From 1988 onwards she sung lead vocals on an number of club oriented acts such as Deja Vu. With the House group Quartzlock they released singles such as “No Regreats” and “Love Eviction”. They also released a cover of the On The House song “(I’ve Got Your) Pleasure Control” which became a hit single in the UK that it attracted the attention og a record label that wanted to sign her.

The first single she released was “It’s Not Over (Let No Man Put Asunder)” however it didn’t become a chart success it did do really well in the night clubs. The next song she released was a song that was originally written for Donna Summer however the writers fell out with her and gave it to Lonnie. The song was “Happenin’ All Over Again.” The single was released in 1990 and did really well in the chart reaching number 4.

They were set to release an uptempo song for her next single however they ended up releasing a slow ballad song and it only reached number 48 in the charts. After that a lot of the songs that she released did not even make it in to the top 20 however she started to do well in the USA. The single Bad Mood and a re-release of Happenin’ All Over Again in 1993 reached number 1 position in the dance charts.  In 1996 she had a few more successes in the US dance chart reaching number 6 with Dirty Love and If You Really Loved Me.

Lonnie is still producing music and is still doing relatively well and even toured the UK in 2010-2011 – What will the future hold for Lonnie Gordon? Well, lets celebrate her beginnings with some of her greatest hits below.
