If you are looking for beauty and art in Rome you really don’t have to look that far as the city is full of beautiful pieces left right and centre. However, one of the places that you must put on your list is the Musei Vaticani.
The one thing I would highly recommend before going any further into this article is – pre book Your visit – we did this and the queue was still insane but it is worth it as there is nothing like it.
The Musei Vaticani is a Christian and art museum based in the walls of Vatican City and has a variety of art that has been collected of commissioned by Popes over the centuries. It has some of the best sculptures and Renaissaince art in the entire world and holds up to 70,000 pieces of art work and shockingly on 20,000 of these are on display.
The museums were founded in the early 16th century by Pope Julius II and is the home of famous artwork such as the Sistine Chapel which has been decorated by Michelangelo and also the Stanze di Raffaello which was designed by Ralphael.
The museum is one of the largest in the world and has a whopping 54 galleries in total. The Musei Vaitcani receives many tourists a year and in 2013 it was recorded that a massive 6 million had walked through its doors.
I have been there and let me tell you some of the art work is truly amazing. I am not religious, but you dont need to be to appreciate the amount of work that has gone into these creations and the actual beauty that a lot of them have. The one thing that I found breathtaking was the actual walls – they are amazing and decorated so beautifully. The golden ceilings is definitely one of the best things I have seen in a room before.
If you are visiting this museum my number one top tip would be to take a bottle of water with you – the place is so big and there is not many places to by drinks and if you visit, especially in the summer you can get very hot and dehydrated.
