The most recent trend in the travel show is to attach a comedy to it and there are so many – some serious, some spoofs, some that are the dynamics of an actual scripted comedy and others because they were one big practical joke! Travel Thursdays have just got bigger as we are now adding a comedic spin on it where we are looking at the comedian versus the travel.
Today we look at a travel show that has a comepletly different spin to the genre as it intertwines into a comedy scripted show. The show proved to be so popular that a third season aired on Sky to do with Spain. Today we look at the show starring Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan called The Trip.
In 2010, the show The Trip hit our screens on the BBC – the show stars comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon playig fictionalised versions of themselves as they go on a tour of the North of England to review restaurants for a newspaper. The show was created to continue their improvised performances from the film a Cock and Bull Story. The show sees the comedians travel to different areas and trying equisite food whilst doing impersonations of other celebrities all intertwined with a fictional plot. The first season was not only a show for the BBC but was also edited together to make a feature film so that it could be entered into the Toronto International Film Festival.
The second series was broadcast on the BBC in 2014 and saw the duo head to Italy to try more amazing food in some of the most beautiful places of the country whilst intertwined with the improvisation, loose plot and impersonations that made the first season so popular. In this season, they travel from Piedmont to Capri followring the journey of the greatest romantic poets. The third series which was released this year was aired on SKY and saw the guys do a similar thing but this time in Spain.
The show received very positive reviews and was praised for its hilarity and for being daring. Whilst a lot of people will class this more as a comedy show its a very good ahow for travel as a lot of the time they visit beautiful areas of the country that make you want to jump into the screen and join them.
