The game was released in 1982 for the Atari 2600 both published and developed by Atari. The game was based around the film of the same name and the games intention was to be an innovative adaption of the Spielberg hit. The aim of the game was to sell millions worldwide off the back off the popularity of the film, however the negotiations to get the rights were long, very long. In fact SO long that the copany only had five and a half weeks to develop the game for the Christmas of 1982.

The aim of the game was to collect three pieces of a telephone that have been hidden in various wells throughout the game. You have to keep E.Ts energy levels up as they go down whenever he does something like moving and teleporting. To prevent this you must eat and collect Reeses Pieces which restore his health. When you collected nine pieces of the chocolate you can call Elliott who will give you a piece of the telephone. Once the game develops, you have to try and get E.T home in his space ship to go home.

The game did so badly that it is a game that is blamed for the video game crash of 1983. There was a rumour, that was actually proven to be true in 2013, that there were millions of unsold Cartridges bruied in the Alamogordo, New Mexico landfill. When they went to the landfill to find the games, they also came across hundreds of other game titles as well.
