Welcome to the month of August, the month where a lot of comedy is happening all around the UK and we have a fun and exclusive access to a sketch groups run at the Camden Fringe. Meet The Scribbling Ape, a sketch group from Bristol that are about to take over The Phoenix this month! So lets start by meeting the guys behind the sketch group!
Camden Fringe

Hey guys tell us about Scribbling Ape! Who you all are and a little bit about yourselves?
Z: Well, The Scribbling Ape was founded this year by…
T: Troy Hewitt.
Z: and me.
T: Ziggy Ross was also involved yes.
Z: We wanted to write comedy that would change the world, and end global poverty, but that proved a little tricky.
T: So we set our sights on the Camden Fringe
Z: We knew we’d need an additional actor, ideally a woman; then we found Ant…
T: he was sleeping outside a local leisure centre
Z: …and we thought he’d be perfect.
A: These guys saved my life man, literally, it was either prison or The Scribbling Ape
T: And prison was full darling.
Ape: They’re a great bunch of…
A: Shut it.
How did you come up with the name The Scribbling Ape?
T: The ape came to me in a dream…
Z: It’s a manifestation of our collective creative consciousness
T: …with a list of commandments etched into a petrified banana peel, then I told the boys.
Z: Course you did mate.
A: Wait… is that what we’re called?
Ape: Other options included the Jiffy Bag Conquerors and Snog the Pirate
Tell us all about the show that you are bringing to the Camden Fringe – The Meat Within?
Z: The show is best described as the space between Dr Seuss and A Clockwork Orange.
T: Well, we don’t know if it is best described as that…
Z: But it is what we are running with at the moment.
T: Yes.
Z: what is the show about then, Troy
T: Excuse me, I know what the show is about.
Z: But do you though?
T: …
A: We join ‘legendary’ TV presenter Pat Mothra, Blackpools sexiest man (nominee), 1997 As he force feeds his audience a boutique omelette of light entertainment.
Z: I don’t know if I would describe it as light, it is pretty f**king heavy.
T: Yeah It is basically the biggest comedy sensation since the whoopee cushion.
A: Along the way you will meet a host of loveable characters including, Chudd Mcaha, funniest man in the universe. Eastern Bloc Euro Pop Sensation Kim Kourgette and…Tracey.
Ape: It combines manic sketch comedy with long form narrative to create a raging of blancmange of comic absurdity. Expect well crafted performances, the occasional song and larger snortingly wonderful wordplay.
Z: – dripping in silliness and gallows humour.
What sort of comedy do you guys perform? What can the audience expect from your sketches?
A: Hang on, is this a comedy?
This is your First Camden Fringe! How are you guys feeling?
Ape: Numb from the waist down.
What have been the highlights of the shows you have performed previously?
Z: Troy interrupting my moment of suspension and completely destroying its function, along with my soul.
T: Yeah, Probably the time I rescued Ziggy from an uncomfortable silence with an impromptu display of comic mastery… or power.
Z: It was supposed to be uncomfortable.
A: ...power, I’d say comic power,
(uncomfortable silence)
What sketch groups do you find inspiring and why?
Z: League of Gentleman, Cardinal burns, Spike Milligan, Monty Python (obviously), and also the Young Ones, Bottom, and the Mighty Boosh in a less sketchy sense.
Who else are you looking forward to seeing at The Camden Fringe and Why?
T: Our audience members
A: Because without them, we’d just be three grown men in an empty room screaming at the walls…
Z: …wearing dresses
Ape: Also, Dave & Emmanuel, and the Tobylikesmilk production ‘Gone off’.
And Finally – in three words, why should people come and see you at the Camden Fringe
We’ll give you four
