Screen Shot 2017-05-20 at 12.51.16If you want a long read (and I mean long) , a historical book and a book about some of the worlds best comedians, then you have come to the right place. Saturday Night: A Backstage History of Saturday Night Live is a great book about how the show began and survived the eighties but it’s also a beast – so you really need to be in the mood for reading if you decide to pick this one.

The book delves into the colourful history of how Saturday Night Live started on television and the adventures and struggles that lied ahead for the show. It explores how it became a phenomenon in the USA out of a time when it was originally thought of as a crazy piece of television and no one would even commission it.

Read about one of the most powerful men in American Television, Lorne Michaels and how he got his name so well known and how he has been able to lead such a successful show that has been the churning factory for some of the world’s biggest stars such as Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Bill Murry and Dan Akroyd – and thats only from the first phase of Saturday Night Live!

Like a lot of shows there was also dark periods and in this book in goes very thoroughly into depth about the fights that broke out, the times when John Belushi got angry, when Chevy started to have issues with the show and the battles that Lorne had to go up against. There is a whole section dedicated to the time in SNL History when it was not under the eye of Lorne and was given to Jane to create Saturday Night 80 and Dick Ebersol for a brief period in the eighties before he came back to Executive Produce.

Read all about how some of the most iconic characters in SNL history became famous and go their name such as Coneheads, The Blues Brothers and many more. The show has been responsible for over 10 stand alone films!

If you are looking for a book that will bring a lot of depth and understanding to why Saturday Night Live is so big in the USA then this is the book for you. It has a lot of interesting stories and really make you have a lot more respect for the show.
