Remake Season – The Comedy – Keeping Up Appearances

Keeping Up Appearances became a huge success in the 1990s when it originally hit our screens. It focussed on an eccentric and snobbish middle class social climber called Hyacinth Bucket as she trues to continuously prove that she is of higher social superiority then she actually is.

The show had five series and gained huge audience in the UK and also worldwide including the US, Canada and countries in Europe including Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands. It was also voted number 12 in the poll for Best British Sitcom.

This year a new show was released for BBC comedy season which was a show looking at a 19 year old Hyacinth in the 1950’s called Young Hyacinth.

The show starred Russell Howards sister Kerry Howard and Mark Addy, Tamla Kari and Katherine Peace and looked at the life of young Hyacinth and how she became the way she is in Keeping Up Appearances.

The revival of the show left a nation divided as to whether it was a good idea with even the lead actress of the originals Patricia Routledge standing up against it saying that the abc must be ‘desperate’ for bringing back the show at all. Fans had mixed reviews with some liking the way that Kerry Howard channeled her inner Hyacinth and others not really understanding the point of it returning at all.
