A Little Thing Called Film – The Early Years

Welcome to a new feature on the Phoenix Remix that is all things film. In the last set of blogs called A Little Thing Called Music I explored how music has had an effect on me and various stories that went along with certain songs and experiences. This set will be no different however it will all focus on —- FILM!

So lets start off with a similar theme in which we did with the last set of blogs – the early years.

There are many films I can remember watching when I was younger. I don’t know what the first film i was introduced to but I know that I was introduced to Rupert The Bear and the Frog Song when I was a baby and there are photos of me falling asleep on my grandads chest whilst watching it. (It probably explains my love of  frogs as well.

One of my earliest memories also is that my grandparents used to have a leather foot stall and when i was like about 2 or 3 I would watch the Jungle Book and used to band on it like a drum when I wanna Be Like you came on.

Here are just a few films that I remember from Childhood that just like Rupert The bear and the Frog Song which have had an impact on my life.

Toy Story 2

Toy Story 1 had a big impact on me i absolutely loved it, I loved it before I even had watched it too! I didn’t get to see Toy Story in the cinema however the Christmas around the time it was released I remember being in Croydon shopping centre and that there was a massive queue for the Buzz Lightyear toy – me and mum lined up together to buy it. I can’t remember if I saw the film before or after I got the toy but i have a feeling that I saw it after I got the toy, either way both of them I loved and it remains one of my favourite films to this day.

The reason why Toy Story 2 is on here instead of Toy Story 1 was that by the time the second film came out I was completely obsessed with the franchise and again I didn’t get to see this in the cinema. However when I got it for my birthday / Christmas present (again, i forget which one it was) I remember sitting in the spare room of my grandparents house watching the film and then once it had finished rewinding it and watching it all over again straight away. I think this film is a strong reason why I have got so into graphics animation as a career.

The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid was one of my favourite childhood films and I used to watch it a lot apparently, so much so that when the VHS broke i apparently cried my little heart out. I dont watch The Little Mermaid very often these days but when i do nostalgia comes flooding back.

Heart and Souls

It’s weird to think that one of Hollywoods biggest A Listers had such an impact on my life before I really Knew who he was. Robert Downey Jnr stars in this film and is about a bus that crashes and he has to help all the members on the bus find their happy ending. I suppose in some ways it was my first introduction to a rom com type film but for years I remembered the story but had no idea what the film was. When i signed up to Netflix in about 2011 I instantly as felt with warmth and happiness as the title popped up and i remembered it instantly.

Star Wars Triology

Star Wars had a major impact on me when I was a kid and I saw all of the original 3 in the cinema when they brought them back. I remember that they completely blew my mind. The graphics, the story, the music, the characters, just all of it. It completely used to amaze me. I am very excited for the new set of films to be released hoping that they live up to expectations.
