It was announced last week that Stephan Fry is stepping down from hosting the much loved television Quiz show, QI. It was also announced this week that panelist Andy Parsons on the show Mock the Week has also quit after 10 years. A replacement is already in line for Stephan Fry, Sandy Toksvig, however it has not been announced who will replace Andy Parsons but rumours are circling.
There is rumours that Frankie Boyle may return to the show as a captain or a female comedian that is a regular one the show such as Katherine Ryan, Sara Pascoe or Sarah Millican will be a replacement. However there are also male comedians that are frequent regulars including James Acaster, Josh Widdicombe, Ed Byrne, Milton Jones and Rob Beckett that may also be in the running.
There are other quiz shows that have lost their leading presenter and have either moved on sucessfully or flopped. Here are a few examples.
Never Mind The Buzzcocks
When Mark Lamar left as the presenter of NMTB, he was soon replaced by Simon Amstell and his witty and rude remarks towards musicians and celebrities made in an instant hit. However, in 2009 he announced that he would be leaving the show to focus on other projects and live shows.
The seasons that followed between the years of 2009 ans 2014 had a variation of guest hosts such as David Wallaims, Demot O’Leary, Jack Dee, Martin Freeman and Claudia Winklemen. Some were good, some were not so great, but all in all unlike some panel comedy shows, this did not work as well with just guest hosts as there was no frequent bond built between the presenter and the captains.
In 2014 They finally chose Rhod Gilbert to host it on a regular basis and it was so much better then the guests panelists. However sadly, after two seasons with him the show completely ended after such a long run.
They Think Its All Over
Before comedy sport shows such as A League of Their Own there was another sports quiz show that was insanely popular called They Think It’s All Over. There as a variation of sport related rounds and each had a captain that was in the sporting world which changed from time to time but included big sporting names such as Gary Lineker, David Gower, Phil Tufnell and David Seaman,
The show was presented by Nick Hancock for a whopping 9 years and was one of the lead cores of the popularity of the show. When the original show finished in 2004, they tried to revamp it with Lee Mack as the host and unfortunately it did not do well and only had one season.
Would I Lie To You / Have I Got News For You
These two shows i have grouped together as they both used to be hosted by the same person and got replaced in both of them. Angus Deayton was the host of Have I Got News For You for 12 years until he got fired in 2002 as their was rumours spreading in the tabloids that he had been using illegal drugs and been having sex with prostitutes and other information about his private life. However with Would I Lie To You, he decided to leave the show after just one season.
When he left Have I got News For You, he was replaced by guest hosts, unlike Never Mind the Buzzcocks, the concept worked really well and has been running in this way for 13 years! Some of the most popular guest hosts include Alexander Armstrong, Jo Brand, Jack Dee, Ross Noble, Jeremy Clarkson and Andy Hamilton.
Rob Brydon replaced Angus on Would I Lie To You and has been there ever since making crazy jokes alongside the panelists Lee Mack and David Mitchell every episode.
