The Laughter Files – Sofie Hagen

The winners have been chosen and the shows have been completed, if you haven’t guessed what we are talking about so far, it is none other than the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This year’s Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards comedy awards were announced at the end of August with Sam Simmons winning the best comedy show for Spaghetti for Breakfast, Sofie Hagen winning the Best Newcomer Award and Karen Koren winning the Panel Prize.

The great thing about the awards is that it starts to highlight who will be the next up and coming stand ups that you will probably see on your television screens, or hear on your radios in the up and coming year or so. In a new set of posts, we are going to introduce you to each of the acts that were in the nomination for best newcomer, starting with the winner of this year’s prize, Sofie Hagen for her show Bubblewrap.

Sofie, originally from Denmark has not just won this years Newcomer award, but has also won the Chortle Best Newcomer Award in 2014 and the Laughing Horse New Act of The Year 2013. She has been on a few television shows that you may recognise her from including Russell Howards Stand Up Central on Comedy Central and Alan Davies: Apres Ski on BBC2. She has also made a few radio appearances on Lols Lounge (BBC Radio 1) and The Verb (BBC Radio 4). She also has her very own podcast Comedians Telling Stuff.

Sofie’s humour has been described as consisting of unique observations, home truths and bullet-proof timing that is currently taking the United Kingdom by storm. In her Edinburgh Fringe festival, Bubblewrap, she talks about a variety of topics such as body image, fighting the system and mixing in a lot of comedic anecdotes about Westlife and the impact they have had on her life, especially when she was younger.

If you are wanting to see Sofie Hagen’s Fringe show, then you still go to see it as it’s showing at the Brighton Comedy Festival on the 21st October and the Nottingham Comedy Festival on the 11th November. Sofie is also appearing at a variety of comedy events around the UK including Gorrine Park Pub with Carl Donnelly and Meryl O’Rourke on 2nd October and Tattershall Castle with Andrew Bird, Dan Nightingale, Jeff Leach and CAimh McDonnell on the 23rd October.
