Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of Eminem. I have been a fan of the rapper’s work since I was a kid and his music videos are worth watching as they are so different and really fun. I also think he is incredibly creative and that is why it is interesting to analyse some of his videos this month.

Rap God – Eminem

Why did you choose this particular video?

If you are talking about Eminem, then we have to finish this month with one of the best songs, and also one that he is in the Guinness Book of Records for is such a clever song. It’s such a clever record with fast rapping and a lot of lyrics lyrics, you need a clever or creative video when it has something like this.

So, what is the narrative?

Eminem is plugged up to a computer machine and they are trying to put as many words as possible into his brain until the computer overloads.

Favourite parts of the video?

There’s so much to like about this video, but we are first going to talk about the editing. There are some really good editing choices in this video, especially in the sections where there is Eminem as a virtual version with lots of color. There are lots of quick edits that look like the video is malfunctioning, which works so well, the rest of the video has more simpler edits and they make it work really well and makes it really stand out.

The color is really interesting in this video. The malfunctioning video is so vibrant, it is really hard to look at sometimes. The rest of the video is more neutral, with, again, a hint of blue or green in the grade, which makes me think of it must be my effect that they use a lot in rap.

Finally, we need to mention graphics. There are some really interesting effects used throughout the malfunction of video has a lot of bright colored vectors, but then also they have a portal scene and another scene where he is made to look like he has created out of little bits of computer matter. There is so much I enjoy, graphics wise in this video that you can watch it again and again and always find something new.
