Taste Of States – This Week – Horseshoe Sandwich

Welcome To Taste of States a place where we celebrate the weird and wonderful food of the United States of America. This can be everything from the snacks that are available for a limited time to the foods that are classic traditions at events such as Christmas and Thanksgiving! Each week we will explore the facts and the history surrounding a different food.

HORSESHOE SANDWICH

Today we are heading to the Illinois State Fair to take a look at a classic to the area of Springfield. IT is a snack that has a 100 year tradition attached to it so let’s take a look at it today.

The Horseshoe Hut is created from a pork loin which they make into butterfly pork chops. The meat is then whacked down. It is then dredged in batter to cover the pork. The batter is made from eggs, milk, breading flour, garlic powder, secret spice mix and funnel cake mix.

You then deep fry the tenderloin and then when it is cooked it is time to layer the sandwich. Texas toast is used as the base and then it is topped with the tenderloin, french fries, cheese sauce which is a mix of cinnamon milk and white cheddar and pepper jack cheese. Then paprika and chili powder are placed on top.

It is a beast the size of it and it is meant to be something that is completely delicious.
