Magic of the Music Video – Eminem Month – Without Me

Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of Eminem. I have been a fan of the rapper’s work since I was a kid and his music videos are worth watching as they are so different and really fun. I also think he is incredibly creative and that is why it is interesting to analyse some of his videos this month.

Without Me – Eminem

Why did you choose this particular video?

This is such an iconic Eminem music video and it is one of my favourites. It was so unique and different when it was released it is one of the reasons I love Eminem. He has a very fun way of creating humour out of the most ridiculous.

So, what is the narrative?

A number of scenarios built around its context, including Eminem and Dr. Dre as parodies of comic book characters in general, specifically Batman, Robin (Rap Boy), and Blade trying to save a child who bought a copy of The Eminem Show that has a Parental Advisory sticker.

Favourite parts of the video?

The best bit about this video is the graphics – it is to make it look like a comic book with Eminem being a superhero. It is a simple technique but it is so effective and makes this video as fantastic as it is. They way that graphics appear throughout as onomatopoeia, narrative links and a Batman like logo that makes it really clever.

The other thing this video does really well is parody well known television shows such as E! The Real World and even the news. It is a great technique as it goes alongside the fact Eminem is known for mentioning people in the public eye as he raps and also heightens the comedy. The logos are parodied and the way it is edited created the humour.

The colour scheme of the video is very bright with a highly contrasted shots – this is to crate the world of the comic book and cartoon like experience. It is really effective and brings the whole video together.
