Tell Us about:
Your latest single you have released:
Our latest single is “Lay Down,” a synth-heavy heart-and-drum-pounding anthem about love and vulnerability, tension and release, war and peace, all that stuff.
Your favourite lyric in this song:
“Cause I know this isn’t meant forever” – I like it cause it’s missing a few important words but I think you either get what I mean or you can choose your own adventure.
Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:
Always hard to pick a favorite child, but one of my favorite Vincenzos recordings is “The Strays Howl” from our debut album “To Live and Chenz in L.A.” It was one of the first songs I wrote in LA about the place all us Vincenzos met (Cinema Bar in Culver City) and the first single we released. Just think it has a nice warm sound and Christopher Xue’s violin really takes it to another level.
Your favourite song to play live:
“The Wind Blows Stronger” is probably our most fun songs to play, especially the build-up at the end of the choruses before Tim Ashby’s lead guitar starts shreddin. Always cathartic to let out a nice scream with your pals!
The song that was the longest to write and why?
Our song “Waves of Fire” probably took the longest because I started writing it about 13 years ago and it just never felt like the right time to take it across the finish line until I started playing with The Vincenzos. Finally felt like it was time and glad I waited!
One of your previous tracks you would recommend for first time listeners of your music and why?
We do a lot of different genres so hard to say! If you’re into more folky/singer songwriter stuff I’d recommend Flood of Tears. If you’re into catchy party rock, I’d say Partying Days, and if you’re into post-punk-ish thrash metal, I Want To Bathe in A Vat of Taramosalata
Dream collaboration:
That’s a tough one. Tom Waits is a lifelong idol but I don’t think I’m worthy of shining his shoes. Would love to collaborate with David Byrne on some stuff (not that I’m worthy of working with him either, but I don’t think he’d intimidate me as much).
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
Feels like I’m a rock in a slingshot about to get catapulted across the sky and then go skippin across a pond. In a good way.
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
Clean underpants. Alka-seltzer. Pepper spray.
Describe your fans in three words:
Hot. Fun. Cool.
A song released in the last few years by an artist or band you wish you had written:
The song TVI by Surf Curse is one of the catchiest songs I’ve heard in a long time. Blew my mind when I first heard it. I got viscerally angry that nobody in my life had told me I needed to listen to that song (in their defense, I don’t think anybody I know has heard it either). The whole album’s great, I spent hours and hours blasting it in my headphones and playing drums along to it.
What we can look forward to from your band this year:
We’ll be releasing at least 3 new albums this year, playing a bunch of shows like the Whisky A Go Go on May 22nd with Agent Orange which will be a dream come true, maybe doing a mini-tour of the west coast at some point, who knows? The world is The Vincenzos oyster
