New Album Deep Dive – INTERVIEW –Necessary Evil, The Trousers

Welcome to a feature where we sit down and talk to bands and artists about their latest albums to find out all about it. Today we speak to The Trousers to find out about the album Necessary Evil.

Hello nice to meet you, tell us about yourself!

The Trousers is a 4 piece garage hard rock band from Budapest. We have been existing since 2005, released 7 albums and several EPs to date. One of the albums features Nicke Andersson (The Hellacopters) as a guest guitarist. Beside their home country the group has been playing in countries as Denmark, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Czeh Republic, etc., and supported bands like Black Stone Cherry (USA), Dirty Honey (USA), MC5 (USA), Atomic Bitchwax (USA) Honky (USA), Tygers of Pan Tang (UK), Peter Hook & The Light (UK), Peter Pan Speedrock (NL), The Blue Van (DK), Barb Wire Dolls (GR).

Tell us about the new album

“Necessary evil” is The Trousers’ seventh album with 10 tracks. Some say it’s our best, regarding the sound and the song crafting, and I agree with that. I started writing songs in the beginning of 2024, and in 2025 we recorded it in Budapest. On one hand it’s a typical The Trousers album, the songs are based on heavy riffing and classic songwriting with catchy hooks, but we are always developing and try to include more and more influences. I think actually some more Sabbat or Alice in Chains moods can be found in the songs.

Favourite track in new album and why?

I always feel that we have done a good album when not everybody is referring to the same song as best on the album. The situation is  the some now: some says it’s the opening “All through the night”, or “Restless in peace” or “Second hand suicide”… One of my best friends highlighted “Condemned o be free”, while the guys from the band, Samu (drums), Bandi (bass) and Peti (guitar) really love to play “Laura Palmer”. My favourite is the closing “Drive me to the stars”, because it is partly written by my late brother, Peter, in a special way. We had a song with a same title two decades ago with our band called Rag Doll. My brother died of ALS in 2022, and early this year I had a dream when I met some people suffering form this terrible illness, and they told me they were praying God to drive them to the starts and stop suffering. I heard the melody in my dream, I woke up, completed it, and included a part written by my brother 20 years ago. So it’s a very special song for us.

Tell us a bit about the recording process, was it fun to do?

For a while we had only one song which later became “Restless in peace”. In the beginning of 2024 I had a very shocking emotional experience, and songs began to flow out of my mind for some weeks, and that’s how the rest of the compositions were born. First we recorder demos, and after that we continued with our usual method: drums firs by Sam, major guitar themes by me, bass by Band, additional guitars by Pete. Then came the solos and the vocals, and our friends Rita Csányi and Zsolt Derecskei added their backing vocals (Rita) and keyboards (Zsolt) parts. We really enjoyed this slow and matured way of recording. The studio man, Zoltán Cs. Szabó (Csészi), our former drummer did an excellent job.

What inspired the album name?

It was actually our studio man, who said that every good music contains a little bit of evil, demonic. We started to call this factor “necessary evil”, which, beside this musical aspect has a general meaning: it’s your shadow, the dark side that you has to challenge necessarily in order to get along with your life. It doesn’t work without this. It s something similar that we called “Invisible darkness” on our 2018 album.

Tell us the idea behind the album cover?

Since 2010 we have always had covers with some graphical artwork. I think we reached the peak with this approach on 2022’s “Animal gun”. The band felt that this time we have to do something different, and we went back to the roots: let’s put the band on the cover again. We had this great band photo from 2024 shot by our driver Laci I Ljubljana, Slovenia where we play every year. Then Sam and myself we worked on it for a day and I think it’s beautiful and cool.

What one of your songs on the new album do you think will the most difficult to rehearse for a live audience?

On the album release party we missed three songs from “Necessary Evil”: “Condemned to be free”, “Fall from the pain” and “Dive me to the stars”. I think that they are mostly album tracks and not for live sessions, because it would be hard to reproduce them live the same way like the other seven songs. These tunes that we played live are more straight ahead rock n roll numbers.

Why should people listen to the album?

There are several reasons for that. The Trousers are a classic rock band with unique tastes integrating several musical influences that make their record exciting to listen to, these are not “I heard it hundred times before” songs. The sound is heavy, but the melodies are catchy, with a very well crafted sonic landscape. Als the album is very diverse: fans of the Stones, AC/DC or The Stooges can enjoy it just like Black Sabbath or Alice in Chains lovers, similarly to the followers of The Hellacopters or Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
