Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.
I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are delving into the world of S Club 7, there are so many reasons why I decided to kick off the year with this band. Firstly they are incredibly uplifting to start 2026 and I think it is a fun pop band to look at. They were around everywhere in the late nineties and early noughties as they were not just a pop band, they also had a television show on CBBC, even auditioned for S Club 8 and had a film. So let’s delve into the world this month.
Never Had A Dream Come True – S Club 7
Why did you choose this particular video?
This was a song that was created for Children In Need so it is interesting to take a look back at it and see how the video style has changed and altered from their other videos. It is a very different pace and has a very unique style to it as well.
So, what is the narrative?
There is no real narrative as such, instead it is a quite simplistic video set on a white background with an element of snow throughout.
Favourite parts of the video
The one thing that is prominent in the video is the use of the dissolve transition, it is evident that it is used to soften the video and to give it a lightness. However, watching it back all these years later it feels a bit much at times and it gets annoying and creates a weird speed to a very slow song.
The colour white is used as the major colour theme throughout – snow, outfits, paler makeup, mountains, diamonds – you name it, the video has it. Again, I think it is to give a softness and due to it being a charity song it means that it appeals to everyone as it is very neutral.
For a slow song, the editing is really fast and it is really irritating me as a video editor and I do not know why. It just feels like the wrong pace for the song. Whilst it is used to make the video feel ‘interesting’ it feels like it doesn’t work.
