Movie Memories At Christmas – This Week – Serendipity

Films are something that we all look towards for escapism – the action, the humour, the romance, the animation. Sometimes these can hold so much more meaning then just an image on a screen and create narratives and memories in our own lives. Welcome to the sister article to Music Memories where we take a look at some of these personal stories attached to films.

Film: Serendipity
Original Release Date: 2001

This film is incredibly cheesy and I suppose some would say it’s bad but I really like it. There are parts of it that are typical romance films but it gives you a sense of hope at times and makes you feel pure escapism.

There is something incredibly nineties about this film, I only discovered this film or started to appreciate it when I was at university and since then I started to really enjoy it.

It is one of those films you can only watch once a year as it is quite cheesy but I love it for that reason. It was only a few years ago I realised that the ice rink at the end isn’t actually ice – it’s so weird and random I didn’t realise before.

Anyway, if you want a film that is on the cheese scale this is it but it also creates hope for those who are hopeless romantics.

Facts about Serendipity

  • John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale filmed only a few days together during the shoot, much like their characters saw each other only for a limited time.
  • The drink Sara and Jonathan have at Serendipity 3 is its famous Frozen Hot Chocolate. Also, since the movie opened, the table where they sit has been called the Star Table at the restaurant.
  • Following the destruction of the World Trade Center on 11 September 2001, images of the World Trade Center towers were digitally removed from all skyline shots of New York City.
