Podcast Episodes That Changed My Life – Lazy Sunday

I have always been a huge fan of podcasts, I have listened to podcasts as far back at 2008 I think it was although I never really listened to them until a few years later. My first real introduction to the world of podcasts was when I was in my last year of university and had to spend hours in the classroom with two of my friends working on our coursework into the very early hours of the morning. It would just be the three of us, myself, Matt and Tom and whilst we were working, the podcasts of The Ricky Gervais show was blasting out into the room. It was in the moment I realised that podcasts can create so much comedy and can really sort of act like a ‘best friend.’

It also sort of created a special bonding moment between the three of us and I am still very much close friends with them today.Over the years, I have learnt that podcasts can really be so much more then the ‘laugh’ and whilst I do listen to a lot of podcasts to help get me through the tough days, the good days and the times I have to work through the night, I also have found that it can be so much more.

Over the years, the idea of what a podcast is has obviously developed, especially with the pandemic and so many more have arisen and so much more content is now available and in a saturated market it can be hard to find really good shows. I have learnt that sometimes episodes of certain podcasts can really have an effect and over time I have shown my appreciation for these episodes on my social media channels.

I have previously spoken about the podcast episode that inspired me to start writing this feature, and you can read more about it here. This week we are talking about a podcast episode that goes further behind the scenes of a show.

Podcast Episodes That Changed My Life
Episode: Lazy Sunday
Podcast: The Lonely Island and Seth Myers Podcast

I cannot remember how I initially came across the fake rap group The Lonely Island but it was definitely at University and it was either I Just Had Sex or Jack Sparrow skit song that I saw first. Initially, I don’t think that I really understood them being from the United Kingdom and then I really liked them and became a fan very quickly.

“…If you love behind the scenes of television then this is such a great insight…”

I can’t remember the first song that I really liked but I became a fan. I used to enjoy their albums and was excited for The Wack Album in 2013 so it was around 2012 I started to love them.

Their songs are so stupid, I have seen quite a few SNL shorts but one of these that I lived away from the Lonely Island Music was the Great Day song – I even turned it into a song on my iPad and listened to it on repeat so much.

When I heard that there was going to be a Lonely Island podcast with Seth Myers, I was very excited. I had not see all the digital shorts so having a podcast was going to look at all of them in depth. I also love the production process of things so it fitted my music and television production nerd out into one podcast.

One of the first episodes that I thoroughly enjoyed was Lazy Sunday – I didn’t know anything about the era of SNL and it was fascinating to hear about the filming and limitations of budget and deadlines to make a short.

“…Initially, I don’t think that I really understood them being from the United Kingdom and then I really liked them and became a fan very quickly…”

It is a fascinating listen and it is riddled with lots of fun and hilarity as there is a lot of jokes and banter between Lonely Island and Seth Myers. There is also a part called ‘Seth’s Corner’ where they discuss what he wrote and performed on that weeks episode of SNL.

I highly recommend a listen, even if you are not an SNL or Lonely Island fan. If you love behind the scenes of television then this is such a great insight.
