Magic of the Music Video – Busted Month – Sleeping With The Lights On

Welcome BACK to the Magic of The Music Video feature! We have been having a break from this but now it is back and this time it is on the new day of Saturday afternoons! Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of Busted and taking a look at some of the videos that I personally feel have some great editing techniques.

Sleeping With The Lights On – Busted

Why did you choose this particular video?

I really like this Busted song so I felt that it was only right to speak about the actual music video. It has an essence of an American music video as well which I suppose also makes it very interesting.

So, what is the narrative?

In the music video they are all singing in a garage and then later at a gig where they are reminiscing about their exes throughout .

Favourite parts of the video?

The way that the use of the close up shots are used very clearly in this video to portray emotion and the ‘personal’ sense of the lyrics. It is used at poignant parts of the video. It is also used at the more personal parts of the music video. It creates a sense of emotion to the viewer watching the video.

The colour red is used a lot in this video – usually in shots of each guys mourning their ex and thinking about their past relationships. All the cars are in red and all the women’s dresses are in red. It is obvious it is used to connote love and emotion. The more into the emotions you get, the darker the red is in the shot. It is such a powerful colour and can really emphasise important things.

Slow motion editing is used to show the ‘reality’ of performing shows and having a good time as a ‘front’ for what each member is feeling inside. It is a simple technique but works really well. It is used a lot in music videos but sometimes it can be used very cleverly to make something magic.
