Music Memories – FIVE Month Special-Don’t You Want It

The one thing I love about music is that everyone has their own story to tell – the musician, the lyrics, the way the fans decipher them and also the way a song can also create a memory or a meaning to someone.

Since Five have reunited this year and are doing a tour all of this moth, I thought it would be fun to have a break from Movie Memories and 100 Weeks Of Discovery (which will both return in 2026) and return to the feature Music Memories to look at Five every week of November.

I was quite young when Five were around but I loved them. Their first album was my first ever CD (had tapes before) and I still have it to this day! Lots of their songs have memories for me attached so thought would write about them every Tuesday!

Track: Don’t You Want It
Artist: Five
Original Release Date: 1998

I used to love the first album and I used to listen to it so much, it was always on repeat. Even though I was really young – around 8-10, I can still remember certain feelings I had in relation to this memory and certain memories as they always pop up if I decide to listen to the album (which I am currently doing!)

From a very young age, I have always created music videos in my head for certain songs when they inspire me ( I written many articles about this years over the years, here is an example ). This track I think was one of the first songs that I ever made a music video for because I used to love it so much. Every time it got to the bridge I would be in a weird hypnosis of my own mind lost in the idea of the music video. A sense of escapism and also just something I loved. Music has that effect on me, I can spend hours thinking about something a song says or does.

I used to act out the video in my bedroom over and over again, with the song over and over again on repeat. I don’t remember much of it but parts of it always come back to me when I listen to the song. I remember it was meant to be in a small smoky night club and all the members of the back kept appearing on the dance floor singing to me and that there was a group dance routine in the chorus.

I really strongly remember the first part up to the first chorus, I remember Abz walking backwards then doing a cross over leg dance step when the lyrics go ‘why do we bring the flow so raw’ . I also remember that when Scott sings the bridge the background of people dancing was all dark and blue and then there was this heavenly light around him on a mid shot. I know this is so flipping random to remember this all these years later but this is how long I rehearsed this dance – hours. The dance for the chorus I can remember a very slight part of it where there was legs lifting the top part of the body doing a front to back roll thing, the sort of thing boybands were doing at the time.

It is really funny listening back to the song now because being that young I didn’t really get a lot of the lyrics to the extent I do now and its quite bizarre to think of me that age making a video in my mind for it!

That is all I remember but it always makes me smile. Music has always been my first love and has always had the ability to make me smile and push my creativity.
