Podcast Episodes That Changed My Life – Here Lies Bridget Christie

Welcome back to Podcast Episodes That Changed My Life! Every other week we will discuss a different show and episode!

I have always been a huge fan of podcasts, I have listened to podcasts as far back at 2008 I think it was although I never really listened to them until a few years later. My first real introduction to the world of podcasts was when I was in my last year of university and had to spend hours in the classroom with two of my friends working on our coursework into the very early hours of the morning. It would just be the three of us, myself, Matt and Tom and whilst we were working, the podcasts of The Ricky Gervais show was blasting out into the room. It was in the moment I realised that podcasts can create so much comedy and can really sort of act like a ‘best friend.’ It also sort of created a special bonding moment between the three of us and I am still very much close friends with them today.Over the years, I have learnt that podcasts can really be so much more then the ‘laugh’ and whilst I do listen to a lot of podcasts to help get me through the tough days, the good days and the times I have to work through the night, I also have found that it can be so much more.

Over the years, the idea of what a podcast is has obviously developed, especially with the pandemic and so many more have arisen and so much more content is now available and in a saturated market it can be hard to find really good shows. I have learnt that sometimes episodes of certain podcasts can really have an effect and over time I have shown my appreciation for these episodes on my social media channels.

I have previously spoken about the podcast episode that inspired me to start writing this feature, and you can read more about it here. This week we are talking about a podcast that I was angry with for a while….

Podcast Episodes That Changed My Life
Episode: Here Lies Bridget Christie
Podcast: Where There’s A Will, There’s A Wake

It is always a weird scenario when a television show has a cast change to replace a lead character and you have to just accept them and believe that they are the same person playing them. It is a weird situation and it can also ruin a show. The only show that I can think of at the top my head where it isn’t a awful thing that happens is Gotham when they keep changing Ivy – initially it feels weird but you get used to it and understand why they do it.

This whole episode made me have faith in the show again

When I heard Kathy Bates was leaving the podcast When There’s A Will, There’s A Wake I was sad and angry! How dare she! She is too good at it! How are they going to replace someone who works so well with the topic. These were some of my thoughts and I refused to listen to the revamp with a new presenter out of protest.

One day, I was stuck at an airport and finally decided it was time to delve into the new version of the podcast.

The one thin that was evident from the start was that they had slightly rebranded the show to give it a different angle. It automatically felt lighter and focussed on the ‘pearly’ gates instead of making death dark. Whilst I liked the last version, this suited Mel’s style and it meant she wasn’t having to compete with the past host as they were both completely different.

I was sad and angry! How dare she! She is too good at it! How are they going to replace someone who works so well with the topic.

The first episode of the rebrand that I listened to was Bridget Christie. I thought it would be a good episode to start with as episodes I have listened to with her on other shows with the comedian have usually been unique as they can be a bit random so I thought it would be a good one to test it.

It was a fun listen – it was light, refreshing and had some very funny moments. It felt like a conversation between friends and that is what reels you in even more.

This whole episode made me have faith in the show again and convinced me to listen to more of it in the future.
