INTERVIEW: Boy Band Musical Comedy Heads to Lambeth Fringe

Today we are speaking to Michael Kunze about a brand new show that is heading to Lambeth Fringe this month. The show is on the 11th October at The Glitch. Boy Band is a musical comedy about a group of men who are definitely teenagers in a boy band. Today we find out all about the show and the songs that you can look forward to.

Hello! Tell us about yourself ?

Hey! My name is Michael Kunze, and I’m the creator, along with Fergus Shipman and Hugh Edwards, of Boy Band. I’m a writer and performer of past shows “Michael Kunze: Infinity Mirror” and “Lil Saffron: Ragu to Riches”, which after their fringe runs transferred to Soho Theatre.

Tell us a bit about the show Boy Band

Boy Band is a musical comedy about three idiots in the world’s greatest Boy Band. It’s a gig featuring an hour of killer pop comedy songs and clowning bits and fun for anyone who is a fan of 90s and 00s Boy Bands.

How are rehearsals going?

Rehearsals are fun! We have the guts of the show so are just trying out little things here and there. Switching out songs that aren’t working, trying to find better jokes.

What can you tell us about the stage set?

We have it set up like a gig, with a few Boy Band flourishes. White flowers, white candles, a DJ station, and an acoustic guitar.

Tell us a little bit about the rest of the cast

Fergus Shipman and Hugh Edwards are both incredibly talented musicians and very funny people and I cannot believe that they, like myself, are only 19 years old.

What is the most challenging thing about doing the show?

The most challenging thing about doing the show is finding the time to all meet! Hugh is in Brighton and Ferg is in Portsmouth, and I’m in London. Zoom isn’t the same as in person, so getting all three of us in the room together is difficult.

The best thing about touring the show?

We love bringing the show to different places! There’s always an audience, and people are always up for a good time. So far we’ve played in Brighton, Guildford, and Woking. Also just getting to hang out is fun.

What have been some of the best highlights since doing the show?

We do a dumb bit at the start of the show where we come out and autograph posters for our audience. It’s been very gratifying to us that a few of those posters have made it onto people’s walls, just like if we were a real Boy Band (which we are).

What is the best reaction you have had from an audience member?

In Woking I had a middle-aged woman scream at me that she wanted to have my children. That’s never happened before, and was pretty wild.

If people want to follow you on social media where can they find you?

Finally in three words why should people come to your show?
