Welcome BACK to the Magic of The Music Video feature! We have been having a break from this but now it is back and this time it is on the new day of Saturday afternoons! Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

To celebrate the return of Magic of the Music Video, we are going to start with a Duet Special Part 2. Back in MAY 2021 we had a look at music videos of duets and this month we are going to look at many more!

Today we are going to look at one of the many collaborations these two have done together!

Apt – Rose & Bruno Mars

Why did you choose this particular video?

I chose this video because I think it is an interesting one when you think about where editing has come in the last few years. I am not a fan of it but you have to think about Tik Tok – it has altered the way that editing is now done and when I watch this video it feels like it has been created for this audience as it has that sense of feel to it. There are a lot of things that when I watch it I think of Tik Tok and I thought I should talk about today.

So, what is the narrative?

The music video is quite simple and focusses on a pink set, drums and them playing the Korean game which the song is based around.

Favourite parts of the video?

Right from the start, the one thing that really stands out in this video is the way that parts of it are edited – it has an effect on it that makes it look faster in some areas. This is sort of relevant to they way that videos are edited now for social media and it is not hard to see why parts of it went viral on Tik Tok.

One thing that is evident throughout the whole of this video is the graphics – they are quick they are striking and give an essence of cartoon to the world that they are in. This sort of heightens the fun that the two are having in the video. The simple colours of pink and white also heighten this and make it feel light hearted and fun.

Another thing that makes this music video really stand out is the retro vignettes that are used throughout. It is a really random contrast to the modern editing but it works really well and creates this really interesting mix to the video
