Today we are looking at a band for this weeks Improv Corner – when I read about this concept the band do I instantly thought that this was something that I had to write about as it is another relevant thing to improv.
In 2023, the Australian band 5 Seconds Of Summer had a section of their live show where they would give the option of the setlist over to the fans. A huge dice would be thrown into the audience and then the audience would throw it around and then the way it landed on stage depends on what song they play next.
It is a simple technique to allow the audience to choose and a last minute surprise song is becoming a common theme over the years (another example is Sabrina Carpenter spin the bottle game to choose the cover she does).
One thing this does is that it shows that when you do an improv show you can have fun with it and bend the rules. When I co-founded Punderstandably Improv one thing I felt was important was was that every show of Improv Towers was different. Every time we performed we allowed the audience to choose the whole way the set went. Every game was in an envelope and different audience members would choose the next game.
It is a simple technique but it is a really strong way to get the audience involved and feel like they really are part of the show.
