Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Superintendo

Tell Us about:

Your latest single you have released:

Inhaling Confetti – this is probably our most experimental and longest song. Weird one for a single, right? Well guess what they’re all singles. This song’s intro is the weirdest thing by far that I’ve ever written on the guitar. When we were in the studio our incredible engineers managed to figure out all the time signatures. There are a lot apparently.

Your favourite lyric in this song:

“mispronounced myself a metaphor” is funny because it’s clearly about me not knowing shit and having no insight.

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

“Sporting Life” – this one’s actually coming out next. It’s way lighter-hearted than Confetti and is more of a straight up punk song. I love all the guitar stuff and it’s about a huge water gun fight.

Your favourite song to play live:

“California, I Guess” – another straight up punk song that’s high energy and lets me go off into the crowd without a guitar (when we have a second guitarist) and sing and dance with everyone.

The song that was the longest to write and why?

Inhaling Confetti. This one went through a bunch of re-writes. I didn’t know what I was doing when I was writing the song. It’s about a million different things and it’s a total mess. I think it’s about the process of songwriting when: you’re constantly on Instagram or Spotify and listening to all this other badass stuff that’s coming out constantly and feeling a bunch of self-doubt, imposter syndrome, thinking you’re feigning excitement about someone else’s project but you are actually excited so maybe you’re just an irredeemable asshole, frustration with songwriting, frustration with really good bands breaking up, etc. I told someone that it’s a song about itself. I feel like I went through the stages of grief writing it.

Your most emotional track:

Inhaling Confetti. See above. Never again.

Dream collaboration:

RX Bandits or Jeff Rosenstock.

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

Friggin pumped, ya know? I’m 40 years old and I’ve done a ton of stuff in my lifetime and getting on stage to do a show is one of them. FR it’s my favorite activity.

The hardest track to play live:

Inhaling Confetti (sorry I keep bringing up that song. Last time, I swear).

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

Extra t-shirts for after the show. The stage is always hot.

Describe your fans in three words:

thirty, flirty, and thriving.

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

Introducing Palace Players by Mew. Pimps and Hookers by NOFX.

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

We’ve got a ton of songs coming out this year that will culminate in the release of our first album, Beauty Routine. You’re going to be up to your eyeballs in Superintendo songs. We’re also planning a little tour I’m not supposed to say much about just yet but let’s just say it involves the best sport.
