What Would You Do? – City High

Today we are heading back to 2001, this was a song that was everywhere, I remember people singing the chorus a lot at school. It was catchy and had some lyrics that some deemed it as a ‘motivational anthem’.

On the 27th March 2001, the American hip hop group City High released the single What Would You Do. It was written by Robby Pardlo, Ryan Toby, Andre Young, Calum Broadus and Brian Bailey. It was produced by Wyclef Jean, Jerry Duplessus, Robby Pardlo and Ryan Toby and released under the record labels of Interscope and Booga Basement. It was the lead single of of their debut album.

The lyrics of the song delves into poverty, single mothers that are forced into prostitution to support their children. It is all about keeping strong. The track featured on the soundtrack for the Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence film Life.

The song did really well and went into the top 3 in Australia (2), Ireland (2), US Hot Rap Singles (1). In the United Kingdom it went into the charts at number 3 in the singles chart and number 1 in the hip hop chart. It became certified platinum in the UK and South Africa.
