REVIEW – Theatre At The Fringe – End of the World FM

We sent our reviewer Damian to watch End of the World FM

Alone in a room, what may be the only survivor of a nuclear apocalypse broadcasts to a probably empty world. With access to a microphone and transmitter, there’s no need for his frenetic and increasingly desperate inner monologue to remain inside: thus, a show!

It’s well-rehearsed with lots of lighting and sound cues that all get hit. We get some neat bits of puppetry and other segments to break up the fast-flowing speech, too. Murphy puts massive energy into this character.

Sadly, for me, it fell somewhat flat. I think this was because I came in expecting more of the Mock The Week and Tim Key vibe referenced in the blurb and it wasn’t then clear for a while whether the show was supposed to be witty (which it was) or funny. I also found the philosophical musings (which are really the foundation of this performance) were delivered too rapidly for me to process and feel the weight.

For me, it was humorous, but not funny enough; meaningful, but with no space to appreciate the insights; and emotional, but not moving enough.

Overall, I didn’t enjoy it much. But there was cheering with the applause and I overheard one audient commenting on the way out that it was “fantastic”. I’d say give it a go if you want the “…one-man show which follows a radio host through the apocalypse as he descends into isolation and madness.” – but not if you’re looking for late-night laughs.

RATING: ** 2 Stars
