How did you come up with the name of your show that your taking to the Camden fringe?
A girl in Year 8 told me about split ends in your hair. That if a hair is split at the end, it can’t grow unless you cut it off. She changed my life with this comment. The deeper metaphor of the comment managed to seep its way into my personal life and romantic attachments. It’s fitting.
Tell us a little bit about your style of show?
It’s a bit like a rave, if Samuel Beckett hosted it, it’s a love story if you look at love in a Sarah Kane sort of way, it’s funny if you like dark humour and it’s honest and truthful. It’s zany. And chaotic, but in a safe and controlled way.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Ophelia,Ophelia, Ophelia, and Sparrow: A Life in Six Acts.
How are rehearsals going?
So good! It gets tricky at times as it’s just me alone in the rehearsal room all the time, so I have to video everything and watch it back. But it has been really fun and surprisingly smooth.
What is the best thing about performing at the Camden fringe?
I’ve never done it before, but the best thing so far was how accessible it has been to new artists. It was the perfect opportunity for me to put on this show and a fairly easy process admin wise, which isn’t my strong suit!
London can be an expensive place to perform in – what key advice would you give to performers that is a sort of life hack?
Do a one person show, teach yourself how to make your own music, photoshop etc. so you don’t have to outsource anyone! Create from yourself, use props you already own (limitations can be helpful), but also ask for help if you need it.
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
The girl in my class in Year 8, who made one comment to me, not knowing I would obsess about that comment and create a show about that comment 13 years later. Or like Sofia Coppola, I don’t mind either way.
The iconic image of the Camden Fringe is the Pigeon – if you could call this years pigeon a name to represent its style what would it be and why?
Maybe Claudia Shnier for shameless self promotion and the pigeon looks a bit ‘how’s-it-going’ and I also look a bit ‘how’s-it-going’. Or I’d call it Little Miss Creepy, also for shameless self promotion.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
@shnierclaudia
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Fun Trauma Party
