We sent our reviewer Damian to watch Hahaha – Hamlet
This play, devised by the performers, is a very clever, moving, politically significant piece of art. Performed mostly in Cantonese (with English and Traditional Chinese subtitles), it creates an abridged and translated Hamlet interwoven with songs, and two thematically-linked modern Hongkongese storylines.
The show picks up on Hamlet’s struggle with indecision & uncertainty; acceptance Vs claiming one’s rights; following vs submitting to The System.
It is beautifully performed, with some lovely direction. I did find reading the translation hard to keep up with due to the speed of delivery, and they suffered some technical issues with the subtitles – but it’s their first day at Fringe and I’m sure they’ll fix their tech. This
This is a heartfelt, self-funded work to explore and explain the age-old internal struggle; Do, or do not; Should I stay, or should I go? To be, or not to be?
Deep. Modern. Relevant: see it
RATING: ****’ 4.5Stars
