REVIEW – Comedy At The Fringe – Encounter

Meet Space Weather Girl a news reader in the show Encounter that focusses on the world of space. It is a show that is a mixture of musical, comedy and theatre all intertwined amongst the factual information about space to create a unique combination. It is a show that delves into an alien encounter whilst she is presenting a television show about space weather.

The show is an unusual fusion and I will admit at the beginning it feels a little bit confused and takes a while for it to get going and find its feet and for the audience to enter the tempo of the show. There is a lot going on – the stage is split into different areas a news room, a spa section and a jazz bar, once it gets going it is easier to understand why it is there.

The show is scattered with audience participation throughout with a question and answer sections about space where the audience can ask any questions they want to about the universe. There is also a mini gameshow nearer the end as well. This works well in keeping the audience engaged with the show and there are some fun elements in there.

The highlight of the show is the music – the piano throughout gives the show the energy that it needs. The singing and the dance routines are the element of the show that works really well and the first song is about a quarter of the way through and it feels that there should of been a song maybe a bit earlier as it brings the show to life and may of worked as an opener to reel the audience into the world straight away. Instead it opens with rules and instructions about the stage set up how the audience can interact – maybe this could of been a musical number?

The show re-enters a new lease of life when Greg from Mars enters the stage – the music increases and the tempo of the show starts to find its feet. The musical talents of the duo together makes the show have an exciting energy and is the highlight of show.

This show has a lot of potential, however I feel at the moment it is a bit of a mixed bag. I understand you need to include science and facts to portray the fact of the lead being an expert in the topic but it starts very fact heavy and that it feels like a lesson before the show has even begun which makes it lose a bit of the magic and the theatre to it.

Overall, this is a show that will be something you should be watching in the afternoon if you want something a bit different but be prepared there will be parts that lack the energy it deserves.
