Welcome to a feature where we sit down and talk to bands and artists about their latest albums to find out all about it. Today we speak to the band Jolly Jackers about the new EP The Blue Disc.
Hello nice to meet you, tell us about yourself!
I am Rea, the singer and flutist of the Jolly Jackers. We are a celtic folk punk band from Hungary with an eclectic style and a lot of energy on stage!
Tell us about the new album
‘The Blue Disc’ is an EP which contains 4 of our older songs. Shortly after we released these tracks back in the day, our first singer left the band and we couldn’t give the songs the attention they deserved. Ironically, we had 2 more singers since then, before I stepped up from being a flutist to be the new frontgirl. We rerecorded the vocals and some of the guitar tracks and gave the songs a new sound.
Favourite track in new album and why?
My personal favourite is ‘Rich, Famous Rockband’. This one had lyrics I wrote long ago and didn’t really resonated with it anymore. When I was on my way to the studio to record the song, I had an idea and completely changed the lyrics on the train to tell the story of the 3 singers who left, and give this album a song which summarizes its story. I love it!
Tell us a bit about the recording process, was it fun to do?
It was really fun! We love going to the studio, we have an amazing producer. The workflow is always seamless and we were pretty fast too! We recorded the vocals and some guitar tracks for these 4 songs alongside with 14 new tracks we’ll be releasing throughout the year in 2 days!
What inspired the album name?
The disc these songs were originally on, had blue colours on it, and we always referred to it as ‘the blue disc’. It was a no brainer to call the renewed album that!
Tell us the idea behind the album cover?
I wanted something personal and playful, and since I love our presence on the stage, I took reference photos from live shows to draw us on the cover. I tried to show our energy through the cover, and I think I succeeded!
What one of your songs on the new album do you think will the most difficult to rehearse for a live audience?
‘Demons and Angels’ is a very complex song with 5 key changes in it. It is a challenge for every instrument and the main vocal too, and on top of that, it has quite strong backing vocals too which is very fun but challenging. I can’t wait to play it live!
Why should people listen to the album?
I think these songs could stand as our introduction for people who don’t know us yet. The album is nice ad short with 4 quite different songs in style, and it’s a fun little window of who we are, how we started and how far we’ve come.
