How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the Camden fringe?
Rohan: After a fair bit of discussion about ourselves as people and comedians which got slightly too philosophical…
Mani: I think the question ‘how brown are we really?’ was asked…
Rohan: …We wanted to find a word that describes how we and many other people feel like an outsider in various ways and situations, which we both explore in our own stand-up.
Mani: We decided on ‘Other’ before we started questioning existence itself.
Tell us a little bit about your style of show?
Mani: India vs Pakistan – no holds barred…
Rohan: It is a 2 person stand-up comedy show. We will be onstage together at the beginning and end of the show, and performing individual stand-up sets of observational comedy in between!
Mani: The final, joint section involves a lot of audience interaction in the form of a quiz, essentially asking ‘How other are you, and have you embraced it?’.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
There are other stand-up comedians who we gig with regularly doing shows at the Camden Fringe this year such as ‘The Dead Good Poets Society’, Phil Green ‘A Broken Man’s Guide to Fixing Others’, SJ Wyatt ‘Coming Out with Doctor Who’, Matt Lowes ‘In Your Endo’, and more!
How are rehearsals going?
Mani: We’re not fighting or getting overly philosophical, which is good.
Rohan: Yeah, we signed a peace treaty. We’re both gigging a lot, as well as enjoying writing together and workshopping our joint bits for the show.
Mani: It takes time, but it’s very rewarding when we finish a bit that we’re both pleased with, which is happening often enough!
What is the best thing about performing at the Camden fringe?
We both live in London, so the Camden Fringe is a nice way to share our art and a bit of ourselves with both people who we know and don’t know in the heart of our home city.
London can be an expensive place to perform in – what key advice would you give to performers that is a sort of life hack?
Rohan: Find the right venue for you and your show. This involves knowing your limits and being realistic – there are plenty of hidden gems and venues for a smaller budget, you just have to do your research! Also, look at where similar shows to yours have been performing.
Mani: My life hack is actually living in London…
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
Mani: Anyone but my family and Tommy Robinson.
Rohan: Someone who has bought a ticket far in advance and then laughs heartily at every punchline during the show.
The iconic image of the Camden Fringe is the Pigeon – if you could call this years pigeon a name to represent its style what would it be and why?
Sky – because that’s the limit… for how good and diverse the Camden Fringe is this year! Sky the Pigeon will be overseeing a bit of everything.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
Rohan: Instagram, YouTube, TikTok – rohanashar_comedy
Mani: Instagram, YouTube, TikTok – mani_jesting
And finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Belly-laughing, chin-stroking, self-embracing.
