Hello! Tell us about yourself?
Hello, I am Mame, one of the wacky characters in the sexy Japanese comedy show Shunga Alert. I am an aspiring shunga artist and recently single. Shunga is a traditional form of erotic Japanese wood printing. My goal is to make a shunga so sexy that unites humanity and saves the world!
Tell us all about your show!
Shunga Alert is an X-rated Japanese puppet documentary comedy. We take the audience on a journey through the sexual culture and history of Japan. We have three Japanese comedians who interact with Japanese art style paper puppets projected onto a large screen. It’s like a live X-rated Roger Rabbit. It’s touching and educational.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
I’m going to see all the shows in the program that have nudity and sexual content warnings, for um, research purposes. I’m an artist. I’m also looking forward to my friends’ shows “Space Hippo” and “Are You Lovin, It?”
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
This is my first time at the Edinburgh Fringe but we have been to other fringe festivals in other parts of the world. My advice: Be kind and always practice safe sex.
If this is your first time – what are you looking forward to?
I’m a shunga artist so I’m looking forward to being inspired by all the sexy sights and sounds of Edinburgh. Wow! So sexy! Also, I heard the adult content in Scotland isn’t all pixelated like it is in Japan. Wow!
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
Wake up. Lie in my futon staring at my phone. Get up. Eat some natto with rice for energy and stamina. Meet up with my castmates. Then I go perform the sexiest Japanese-documentary-comedy-puppet show at the entire Fringe!
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
Everyone suggests Japanese restaurants to me because I’m Japanese. I can eat Japanese food at home. I want to try some haggis and deep-fried Mars bars.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
All the sexiest people in the world come together to Edinburgh in August. I feel like my chances of getting lucky are pretty good.
What is the hardest part about performing at the Fringe?
The hardest part? You want to see it? Here? Now? In front of all these people?
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
I brought my two best friends, who are also my castmates. My friend Pain is a Virtual Idol and my pal Pleasure is a sentient sex doll. I also brought the legendary and mythical “Hammer of Issun-bōshi” that has the magical power to shrink me down to a tiny size.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
The magic hammer helps. When I’m small, one kebab can feed me for an entire month.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Condoms. A paint set for capturing important memories. And your favorite “health” toy.
What’s the secret to successful flyering?
While is can be attention-grabbing to flyer in the nude, you need to leave some mystery so that people will still come to your show. (Also, it may not be legal in your country, I need to research.)
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
instagram.com/theatregroupgumbo and instagram.com/mochinoshapuppet
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Sexy Japanese Puppet-show!
(Is it technically four words? English isn’t my first language.)
