Hello! Tell us about yourself?

Hello! I’m a comedian and actor who does character comedy and stand-up. Some people know me from the internet and others know me as someone who simply cannot help but come up to Edinburgh to do weird comedy stuff every year.

Tell us all about your show!

My show Goblin is a dark piece of comedy theatre about a teenager in the 2000s who falls under the sway of an evil older man and transforms into something grotesque and unrecognisable: the co-owner of a fitness studio. It’s a one-person show and I attempted to premiere it at the 2024 Fringe but the roof of the yurt I was performing in caved in. So this is attempt #2!

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

So many – this year’s gonna be a corker (a British phrase I’ve learned). Kathy Maniura, Siblings, Su Mi, Sam Nicoresti, Elf Lyons, Josh Glanc, Lara Ricote, Rachel Kaly, Daniel Foxx, Bella Hull, Zoe Coombs Marr, Andrew Doherty, Lachlan Werner, Mary O’Connell, Pedro Leandro, Sam Williams, Katie Norris, John Tothill, Lorna Rose Treen, Andy Barr. And more of course!

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

Yes! This is my 8th Fringe. My advice would be that the only reason to do it is because you love the show you’re going to do, and any other reasons are not to be relied upon! Nobody has to do the Fringe, but if you do it for the right reason (there’s only one) it’s fabulous.

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

Wake up late, eat some yoghurt, count the bruises that have accumulated over the course of the previous day’s performances. Have coffee, pre-book tickets for the shows I’ll see today because otherwise I will not go see them. And you must see shows in Edinburgh! Head into town. This year I’ll be in a play at half past three! Then see a show, find somebody I know, get a bite. Then prepare for my own show, Goblin, at 9:50 pm at Summerhall. Do show. Have a blast (hopefully)! Then find someone to have a pint with, end the day (in the wee hours) in the Assembly bar (probably).

Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?

Gotta be the crepe shack!

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

The performance stamina you build up, and the way your craft improves. Also late nights with wonderful friends!

What is the hardest part about performing at the Fringe?

The schedule, the games your mind will sometimes play (they are fake!!) and the lack of anything resembling wellness or a healthy lifestyle. But that’s okay (for max one month)!

Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?

A nice fragrance to mask the smell of the the basement where I’m inevitably going to be spending the month.

What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?

Performers pass discounts. In every other sense, scientists have determined it’s actually impossible to save money at the Fringe.

What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?

Deodorant, shoes for walking, bag that you don’t mind putting in dirt and piles of rubbish constantly

what’s the secret to successful flyering?

Fully dissociate

If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?

@derekscottmitchell and @letsdoubledutch

And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?

Funny, dark, character
