Movie Memories – This Week – Beethoven

Films are something that we all look towards for escapism – the action, the humour, the romance, the animation. Sometimes these can hold so much more meaning then just an image on a screen and create narratives and memories in our own lives. Welcome to the sister article to Music Memories where we take a look at some of these personal stories attached to films.

Film: Beethoven
Original Release Date: 1992

Growing up in the nineties and noughties there was always one film that was always on the television. I haven’t seen it in years and seems to have completely disappeared from television screens as far as I am aware. Today we are talking about the film Beethoven.

A film about a Saint Bernard puppy that is taken in my a family and all the madness that is happens when it grows up and the father is not a fan.

For a children’s film it was quite fun – I don’t remember all of it but I know that the bit that I really enjoyed as a kid it when they first get the puppy and you watch it grow up and they have to deal with all the mischief that Beethoven gest up to. The amount of food, the slobber and the mess – great fun!

It was a film that was always on television so at a point you always got bored of it – if you had not seen it a lot then it was a really fun family film.

You come for the enjoyment but stay for the dog.

Facts about Beethoven

  • Eleanor Keaton, Buster Keaton’s widow, trained the dog Beethoven for this movie.
  • Great care was taken to make sure the animals used in filming were not harmed. Measures taken included many trick shots, multiple cuts, and even a mechanical dog/dog suit in order to achieve scenes.
  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s film debut. He is the kid on the right wearing a green top who gets on the school bus while Ted hides behind a tree before getting on the bus.
