Hello! Tell us about yourself?
Hello! Bristol born and bred comedian, natural mousy brown hair but spiritually redheaded. Chappell Roan was my top artist back in 2020 and I won’t let anyone forget it. 5’11’’ and never not sad about that. A lapsed catholic and aspiring actor who was too tall and weird to be in theatre and then fell in love with comedy.
I am an ex civil servant from the Department of Business and Trade which sounds fancy but isn’t, and doesn’t mean I necessarily know what tariffs are. I have wanted to impress everyone I’ve ever met since the age of about zero. I’m really good at comedy but really bad at admin.
Tell us all about your show!
The show is my little baby, and like most babies it keeps me up at night, I occasionally resent it and it costs an exorbitant amount of money. Overall, though if my show were to be kidnapped, or stuck under a car or something, I would develop that cool thing where mum’s get inhuman strength in order to save their kids from harm.
It’s definitely got lots of jokes in it. It’s not one of those sort of meandering pensive hours of comedy. It’s fast and confessional and silly and occasionally quite raw and peppered with odd little poems. I’m finding that the people that love it most are bisexual neurodivergent girls, but their haunted skinny boyfriends are tending to enjoy it too.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Oh god there’s loads. My friend Caroline McEvoy is working with the wonderful Ben Target on her show and I think it’s going to be a masterpiece in comedic storytelling. I’m also in a group chat called ‘Fringe Irish Girls’ – don’t ask why I’m allowed in as a gross little English wench but that’s Alison Spittle, Grace Mulvey, Marise Gaughan and Roger O’Sullivan (an honorary girl). Apparently I only see Irish people at the Fringe???
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
I have done the Fringe before. The first thing that comes to mind is that you will consistently walk 10k steps a day which scientifically means you can eat whatever you want and you’ll have more than earned it. Apart from that; find green spaces and keep talking to your normal, non performer friends who will remind you that ‘Kim, there’s people that are dying’ ie non of it is a huge deal and we are all immensely lucky to even exist.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
Ok so my alarm clock is FOMO (fear or missing out). I will stay in bed until this feeling becomes unbearable and I must go into the world to cure it. Having said that; breakfast is a must (I’m thinking I might get a tattoo of a Scottish breakfast while I’m up there). I will usually do something sexy with eggs, but occasionally buy a brunch with a pal. Then it’s basically wonder round and see shows until flyering time. Maybe a little shower at some point? Maybe a little cry? It’s all part of the magic baby. Then show, drinks, bed.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
I’m not gonna say Wings, I bet everyone says Wings. (But it’s Wings). But to be quirky and different I’m gonna say that there is a coffee van by the Meadows called Uplands Roast and the hot chocolates there are insane.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
Getting to do the show and show everyone the inside of my brain!
What is the hardest part about performing at the Fringe?
Putting pressure on yourself to achieve and network and develop when you are running on 2 hours sleep and vibes.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
I always bring my own bedding so it feels a bit more like home!
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
I would say probably have rich parents, or rich and famous parents. Be generationally wealthy or maybe marry well! Hope this helps!
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
- Blister plasters
- Rennies
- Strepsils
what’s the secret to successful flyering?
Don’t flyer people if they look like they wouldn’t enjoy your show!
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
Please do follow me I LOVE attention! Instagram and tik tok are my poisons of choice. @jessienixoncomedy for both.
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
I have 34DDs
