Hello! Tell us about yourself?
Guido: I’m Guido, a performer & theatre maker from Uruguay, though I’ve been in the UK now for over a decade now. I’ve been making performance work for a few years now, focussing on comedy, audience interaction, and politics. This is the first time writing a musical, and couldn’t be more excited to bring it to Fringe.
Sergio: Hola! I’m Sergio. I’m a f******* immigrant from South America making theatre for the woke agenda.
Tell us all about your show!
Guido: JEEZUS! is a musical about a young boy who comes to terms with his sexuality when he falls balls deep in love with the hot man on the cross, Jesus Christ himself. Based on my partner Sergio’s life, hehe. It’s a fun exploration of how religious upbringing f***** you up, colonialism in Latin America, and of course, it’s SO queer, and SO SEXY.
Sergio: JEEZUS! Is an unapologetically dazzling, defiant and divine musical about a queer boy growing up in very Catholic South America and falling balls-deep in love with our lord and saviour. Winner of the Edinburgh Untapped Award 2025 – Based on a true story whaaaat
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Guido: I’m dying to see the other untapped winners, they all look so much fun. Then I’ll probably be flitting about trying to find as many immigrant and Latino performers and of course, the gayer the better.
Sergio: Our 2 Untapped Award comrades of course! ‘Pigs fly easy Ryan’ by @nonstop.cool and ‘Ways of Knowing’ by @emergencychorus
I really want to see Garry Starr’s Classic Penguins and I’ve never watched the Kaye Hole, can you believe it?!
And of course all of my fellow Latinx performers and companies in the Fringe: Amazons at Summerhall, Miss Brexit and Earnest?!… in Underbelly
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
Guido: I have! I’ve performed several times w …Earnest? and in 2023 w my solo show Playing Latinx. Everyone says it, but it’s a marathon, not a sprint. It’s a long month, so learn what rhythm you’re actually able to do.
You will have a breakdown at some point. It’s fine. Crying inconsolably is also a strong bit of the experience. Enjoy the full festival! Go to the parties, make friends w random people, take a risk on shows that sound mental. There’s really nothing else like it.
Sergio: I sorta-kinda have, I was supporting Guido (my scene and real-life partner in JEEZUS!) on his one man show PLAYING LATINX in 2023 doing the backstage track. I also performed for a week in Covid-Fringe 2021.
I guess… 1. Lower your expectations about fortune and fame to a minimum. 2. Keep healthy, because pressure will be on and everyone will have a breakdown at some point so be ready to give self-love and self-care. And 3. Have a blast making and improving your art.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
Guido: Sleep in, lots of coffee, flyering in silly costumes for a couple hours, food, maybe catch a show, PERFORM (you need to aim to peak here, and not before), then chill/party/catch another show.
Rinse and repeat. Best month ever.
Sergio: This is me being super optimistic. I will go to the gym (yeah right!) and then, I won’t have to flyer because the show will be sold out (lol) so instead I’ll go to a sauna to warm up my voice…. And then show at 6:50pm babyyy
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
Guido: There used to be a Mac n cheese cart by bristo Square, which was pure evil. Hope it’s still there. Not something for everyday, but when you need comforting, it really hits the spot.
Sergio: There WAS a place called BLACK GARLIC near summerhall, which I think is no longer there. But the noodles place near there is also very good. Sorry I’m bad with names. But it’ll probably be my kitchen cause I make some banging Peruvian food
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
Guido: On an artistic level, fringe plays rarely get month long runs, so it really gives your piece time to mature and breathe and really find itself. Don’t be surprised if your show is considerably different at the end of the month.
Sergio: Getting to do it with the love of my life
What is the hardest part about performing at the Fringe?
Guido: It’s long. Some days you won’t want to do it. But if you’re lucky, you’ll find that even in the terrible days you’ll meet someone who’ll quickly turn you around, or you’ll have someone in the audience who really needed your show that day, and it’ll all have been worth it.
Sergio: It’ll be the first time I do a musical 25 days in a row, so I’m training because I think that will be f******* hard.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
Guido: I brought my partner the last couple of times and that really helped! So much so that this time around we’re performing together.
Segio: Palo Santo, which is a natural incense bark that I get from the Amazon. In the absence of Ayahuasca…
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
Guido: No, mate, there isn’t. You will leave the fringe considerably poorer than how you arrived. But much richer from the experience.
Segio: Lidl. Also, BYOB
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Guido: A yoga mat, rehydration tablets, jakemans vocal sweets. It’s all about the recovery, baby.
Sergio: Your phone, The Bible and a POS to sell merch
what’s the secret to successful flyering?
Guido: Find a game to play. Anyone can shove a flyer into someone’s hands. But to entice people and make them want to take a flyer from you? Well that’s the game, really.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
Guido: You can find me and the show on insta here. @elguidogarcia @jeezus.uk
Sergio: @sergiomaggiolo on IG (I’m up for hire! I’m a director and dramaturg and also write and perform, I can clean the rehearsal room, bring coffee and tell you how cute you look all for an ITC rate)
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Guido: It’s sexy, it’s silly, and it’s fiercely political.
Sergio: Holy. Horny. Hillarious.
