Hello! Tell us about yourself?
Whaddup! I’m a comedian, top shagger, champagne socialist, birdwatcher, medium-functioning stoner, who loves dancing and is terrible with money. Unfortunately, I’m American. Fortunately, I now live in London.
Tell us all about your show!
This is my debut hour! It’s standup comedy and storytelling about mommy issues, hedonism, life in late capitalism, and more. If you can appreciate both jokes about the philosophy of stoicism and jokes about golden showers, this show is for you.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
I only go to shows based on how fit the flyerers are. But…there are some comedians I love who are bringing debut shows I’m excited to see: Hasan Al-Habib, Roger O’Sullivan, Rohan Sharma, Tim Biglowe, Sophie Garrad, Daniel McKeon, among others.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
In 2023, I did a 45-min show called Communist Dad. My advice is after each show, write a few sentences about how it went: how you feel, how big the audience was, and any noteworthy moments or crowd interactions. It doesn’t have to be a detailed journal entry.
The month can be such a blur, these little details will get lost and at the end, you may feel unsure if your run went well and forget some special moments. Looking back at my notebook from 2023, I can see that I felt good after most shows, the couple days I only had 10 people in were actually some of my favourites, and I have a collection of cherished memories.
My second piece of advice is to take up smoking. You deserve it!
If this is your first time – what are you looking forward to?
This is my first full hour, so I’m looking forward to getting even more stage time. That extra 15 minutes per show adds up to 6 more hours of attention I get across the month. Sweet!
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
Wake up, chug three coffees, do the daily sudokus on the NY Times Games app, and take a long walk. It’s giving grandma, I know. Before my show, I’ll smoke a cigarette and listen to my pump-up jam (“Josie” by Steely Dan). After the show, I’ll journal, see a show, and booze with friends.
Notice how I didn’t mention drinking any water…I’m working on it!
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
There’s a cocktail bar I adore called Satyr. I love to go there and drink martinis. They come with olives which I do eat.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
The audiences are different from the standard London crowd, and it’s cool to see how my comedy can connect with people I might not expect. When I did Communist Dad, for example, I got a lot of older Scottish men coming to see it who were some of the biggest fans because they enjoyed the leftist political jokes!
What is the hardest part about performing at the Fringe?
Knowing that at any moment I might have to make small talk with my peers.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
I have a lucky rock that I bring with me and have in my pocket on stage. It’s Bumblebee Jasper, which is a complex calcium carbonate mineral with inclusions of arsenic and manganese oxides. This mineral was only recently discovered in the 1990’s in Papandayan Volcano in West Java, Indonesia. Since then, it has yet to be discovered anywhere else on Earth and geologists don’t expect to find another deposit of it anytime soon.
I like it because it looks like a bumblebee and when I carry it around good fortune rains down on me.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
If an audience member flirts with you after the show, invite them to buy you a drink. Eat beans. Don’t waste money on an umbrella the wind will immediately render useless.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Long papers, condoms, a lucky rock.
what’s the secret to successful flyering?
Swap with a friend and flyer for each other. I could wax poetic for hours about how awesome my comedian friends are, but I cringe telling a stranger why they should come see me.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
I’m on Instagram @candacebryan.
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Wacky surprise ending!
