If there is one thing that fascinates me about improv and that is how it is portrayed in Television, books and Film. This is becoming more and more apparent in recent years because the comedy art form is sort of in fashion. There are some interesting topics that we can gain from these ways they are displayed so every so often we are going to look at different scenes from different shows and films.

Today we are delving into the world of the television show Only Murders In The Building. In season 4 they mention improv and slightly touch on it so I thought today we would take a look at it.
In season 4 in episode 3 Richard Kinds character Vince Fish wears an eye patch and they are convinced that he is a murderer. They believe it is because of the eye patch and go to extreme lengths to see what is under it. Eugene Levi and Steve Martin turn up to his apartment with eye patches as well. Eugene says to Steve to tell the story of how he got conjunctivitis – he is confused when Eugene says ‘tell him the story you told me at the improv’ ad Steve goes ‘oh yes and….’
Eugene Levi is famously known for starting his career in the improv scene so its a great little nod to this. Also it is a fun little play on words as it shows the rules of improv in a fun little sentence – defining it quickly to the audience as to what it is.
It is a very quick bit of script but the writers knew what they were doing and that is why it stands out so much.
