I feel I have to write about this as an article after what I witnessed the other day. It is not normal for me to use this article to be a bit ‘preachy’ but I felt that I needed to write something.
I live in a part of the United Kingdom that is surrounded by nature. It is one of the reasons it gets a lot of tourism throughout the year and people come from all over the world to see it.
Whilst a lot of tourists respect the area, there is a percentage that doesn’t. I witnessed two tourists doing this the other week in a different part of the UK where they were bullying a small highland cow calf to come to them and started to feed it food from their bag when it specifically says don’t as they only eat grass. The gap in the fence they were forcing the calf to go through was really small that the calf nearly got it’s heads stuck, all for the sake of a social media post.
We got involved and made the park rangers stop them. It did upset me a lot.
Whilst it is great to get the perfect shots for the socials, putting an animal at risk and potentially in danger is appalling. Treating wild animals as if they are a show piece is terrible. I have seen articles in local papers where they are begging tourists to not feel wild deer cereal, chocolate and crisp. Yes, this is the world in which we now live in.
Whatever your opinions on animals, respect the wild, and it will respect you. It is not there to be your star on social media, it is there to live.
