Films are something that we all look towards for escapism – the action, the humour, the romance, the animation. Sometimes these can hold so much more meaning then just an image on a screen and create narratives and memories in our own lives. Welcome to the sister article to Music Memories where we take a look at some of these personal stories attached to films.
Film: The Simpsons Movie
Original Release Date: 2007
I read the other day that we are now as far away from 2007 (the film release year) as the film was away from the initial release of the first ever episode of the Simpsons (1989) – that is a scary thought! From reading this it made me have memories around the release of the film in the UK unless you had SKY, which we did not.
I remember we went to one of the first viewings at my local cinema, I remember queuing up to get into the cinema room (remember doing that?! It was a thing that used to happen for huge releases! ). I also remember a lot of Simpsons memorabilia was released and I had all their special edition posters that were released as part of the film.
It was a huge phenomenon – I enjoyed the film but I think I still preferred the show. I just remember enjoying all the fun of the way they incorporated everything into an extended version of the show.
Facts about The Simpsons Movie
- In the original script, Marge was going to be the one to have the vision in church. However, as Marge is normally very reserved and rational, the crew felt it would make more sense for the family to overlook the warning if it was delivered by Grandpa instead.
- The script for the voice work was to be kept so secret that the producers personally shredded the script after every voicing session.
- The Simpsons Movie is the only PG-13 rated animated film to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature. It is also the only film based on a television show to do so.
- Work on the script began in 2003 and included 158 drafts written.
