Movie Memories – This Week – I,Robot

Films are something that we all look towards for escapism – the action, the humour, the romance, the animation. Sometimes these can hold so much more meaning then just an image on a screen and create narratives and memories in our own lives. Welcome to the sister article to Music Memories where we take a look at some of these personal stories attached to films.

Film: I,Robot
Original Release Date: 2004

There was a time when waiting for the DVD release of a film was really exciting – the thing that made it thrilling was the shops such as Blockbuster, Woolworths and HMV would have loads of posters and events to promote the release of something.

I saw I,Robot in the cinema – I remember when the trailer first came along – it was unique, exciting and dramatic – all you want from an action sci-fi film. It was one of those films when you come out of the cinema with an energy and excitement. It was a film you couldn’t wait for it to be out on DVD.

When I,Robot did get released on DVD I remember the posters and the huge standing signs they had as well. We went into our local Blockbuster a lot and we had a good relationship with them – we were always renting films and Playstation games so they new us really well.

There was a time when they wanted to get rid of the promotion posters, I can’t remember if I asked or if they offered to give it to me – either way, I said yes. I had that poster on my wall for years – it was so big that it was as tall as the wall in my room – it was big and bold but pretty cool.

Facts about I,Robot

  • he car used by Will Smith’s character is a concept car called Audi RSQ, which was designed exclusively for the film and includes special features suggested by director Alex Proyas.
  • No re-shoots were required, a rarity for a movie as big as this.
  • Sonny is not walking in step with the other robots as he’s being escorted, which subtly sets him apart as unique, even during the most mundane actions.
  • Will Smith told how he wrecked the motorcycle at around sixty miles per hour, during the filming of the scene at the robot storage facility (you can see him begin to lose control in the film).
