Today’s Featured Liverpool Improv Festival Act – INTERVIEW – The Orange Of Truth

All this month we are talking to acts that are performing at the Liverpool Improv Festival which takes place between Thursday the 24th – Sunday the 27th of April 2025. Today we find out about The Orange Of Truth.

Tell us about:

Your latest improv show for Liverpool Improv Festival?

We (Jen & Terje) are international teachers and performers, but we live in different countries (England and Norway) so we’re thrilled to be reunited to perform our duo show, The Orange of Truth! “A Hilarious Exploration of Human Interaction and the Art of Spontaneous Storytelling” (audience feedback)

What happens when you take Norway’s tallest improviser and England’s shortest improviser and give them a stage? * The answer is “The Orange of Truth” or TOOT for short! An unscripted world where truth is twisted, stretched, and reimagined. Using every inch of the stage (and sometimes beyond), the show explores how we bend the truth in everyday life, offering a fresh perspective on the stories we tell ourselves and others. From the dreams we have to the nightmares we run away from – you’ll be left wondering exactly how far is too far when bending the truth.

*we have not measured every improviser in Norway or England but we believe it’s true…

Your favourite suggestion you have been given?

Terje: All of them! Every suggestion is an invitation from the audience to play with them!

Jen: Terje is so polite…I’m all about the suggestions that throw you sideways, someone once held up their child to me and simply said, “what about this?”

Your favourite venue to perform at:

Terje: Anywhere, really. It’s a boring answer, but life’s a stage—and I just made this answer even more boring, didn’t I? Sorry!

Jen: The Unity Theatre, Liverpool, Hope Place, L1 9BG…too obvious?

Improv hero:

Terje: Plural, please! Everyone who shows up for an improv class for the first terrifying time is a hero in my book!

Jen: How delightful is Terje please…I have a few but my dear friend Susan Messing is an absolute legend, she makes it all look so effortless and has taught me so much both in classes and from watching her perform and just being around her.

Dream venue to play at:

Terje: It would be fun to perform somewhere in the future—or perhaps the past would be even more fun? We could predict a lot of things about to happen, which, coincidentally, is what we do now. Mind blown!

Jen: I’d love to perform improv in the round but also, I love those quirky weird venues where every chair is different, and nothing is on a straight angle. Basically, we’ll perform anywhere (please!)

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

Terje: Is giddy a feeling? Yes? Giddy!

Jen: A perfect mixture of joy, fear, exhilaration and needing a wee

The hardest improv suggestion to perform and why:

Terje: They’re all quite easy, really. Yes, even classics like “dildo” and “pineapple.”

Jen: I agree with Terje, I think it’s far less about the suggestion making performing hard, the hardest thing is if the ‘vibe’ of the room is off.

Essential items you always take with you to a show?

Terje: Jen! She’s a wonderful artist, and I love performing with her!

Jen: I can’t answer, I’m too busy crying at how lovely Terje is…. (also, vocal zones, a bottle of water and a pint after the show!)

Describe your fans in three words:

Terje: Super Duper Coolandgoodlooking!

Jen: absolutely bloody delightful

What we can look forward to from you this year:

Terje: A jolly good show! Thank you, I’ve been waiting since 5th grade English to use that phrase!

Jen: Loads of energy and two people who genuinely really like making stuff up with each other. Also, LIF2025 is just part of the exciting stuff we’ve got planned as a duo…but if we told you everything now, we’d be jinxing it – so keep following us both on Instagram to find out more!
