Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Mary Elle

Tell us about:

Your latest single you have released:

The last single I’ve released is Religion, a song about overcoming the societal and toxic norms that have become religion and finding true Faith again.

Your favourite lyric in this song:

There are a few lyrics that are quite personal to me, but I think my favourite is in the chorus: “Religion’s out for me, it’s kicking up my feet, and now I’m on my knees.”

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

I love pretty much every song I’ve created since each one has a story from a different chapter of my life. At the moment, however, my favourite is “Dear Friend.” This song has probably been one of my favourites ever since I made and finished it. Out of all my songs, it has the most personal and raw message.

Your favourite song to play live:

Honestly, almost all of my songs are quite difficult to play live and I have a lot of practicing to do. But for the ones that are both comfortable and emotional to sing I think I’d be “Dear Friend” and even “Serotonin.”

The song that was the longest to write and why?

I actually tend to write a lot of my songs rather quickly and then make any changes during production, since in the moment the inspiration comes to me rather quickly. But out of them all, I think Religion probably took me the longest to write since it was during a very emotionally difficult time for me and I wanted the words to give the message that I truly felt. It was a delicate matter after all and one that needed to be done correctly, otherwise I could risk it being interpreted in a very different way.

Your most emotional track:

Definitely “Dear Friend” in my opinion. It’s about a real person and a real situation, carrying some heart-breaking themes to it. However I could also say “Religion” is one of my most emotional songs too, as it also tackles some very real and sensitive themes.

Dream collaboration:

Billie Eilish.

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

Recently I have only performed live in front of friends and family, and I think that’s somewhat more nerve wrecking than performing in front of strangers. While I still get pretty anxious beforehand, I somehow feel less judged or in need of impressing people. When it’s in front of strangers, I can just sing my songs knowing I’ll never see them again. Somehow it comforts me not knowing if people liked my songs or not, though I’m still very happy when they do.

The hardest track to play live:

Oh, definitely Religion. It’s my biggest song yet and takes a lot of preparation and practice in order to hit those ambitious parts that take a lot of power from my voice.

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

I haven’t been on tour yet but I carry a bag with me everywhere that always has my phone, a book, money, makeup, headphones, brush, and sketchbook. As well as some safety items.

Describe your fans in three words:

Funny, supportive, instructive.

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

To be honest, when I first started music writing there were a lot of songs I wish I had written. But now, I mainly just really appreciate and admire the songs I hear. To name a few with really great writing, I can think of “The Greatest” by Billie Eilish, “Like Him” by Tyler, The Creator, and “I Know The End” by Phoebe Bridgers.

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

My EP at last! Followed by release of my final song, Under the Willow, my EP will be complete and finalised for everyone. After that, we’ll see where life takes me.
